RHINO POACHING: In just a decade, more than 7245 African rhinos have been lost to poaching. In South Africa you are looking at three Rhinos a day and the problems are as dire in all neighbouring countries, where we are looking at the highest figures in decades and the reasons for this include demand from wealthy individuals in Asian nations eager to show off their financial success. But antique and grey market products of ambiguous age still thrive around the world as the price of rhino horn increases to more than $60,000 per kilogram ($1,700 per ounce). ABALONE POACHING: Perlemoen / abalone is endemic to South Africa. It’s meat is a delicacy and aphrodisiac also known as ‘white gold’ in the Far East and it gets (illegally) transported overseas to upmarket restaurants where people pay up to R4500 a kilo in South Africa and almost three times that in Asia. The locals who dive for it see around R300 a kilo but in poverty-stricken areas that’s good money. If the poaching continues at this rate, it won’t be long before abalone is extinct in the wild.
